Social media reviews provide a much bleaker reality of the nursing home existence than the governmen

A recent study by the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at University of Southern California reveals that social media reviews are significantly less favorable than those ratings found on the nursing home review website run by the federal government, "Nursing Home Compare".

Consumers and social media users report the quality of nursing homes to be much poorer than the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services report them to be.

For instance, nursing homes'Yelp ratings were different from the Nursing Home Compare rating more than 75 percent of the time, and was significantly lower often.

Some experts believe that the federal website is more difficult to use and users may be confused and have difficulty with reporting on the federal website. Other experts believe the nursing homes may be "gaming" their ratings. Both the federal nursing home website as well as social media sites have been faced charges of users attempting to manipulate ratings in the past.

It was further reported that Yelp recently partnered with the New York-based news non-profit ProPublica to report government data about nursing home fines, serious deficiencies and payment suspensions on its review pages.
